The requirements
Could you foster? Probably.
Families are often surprised by how attainable fostering is. In Texas, you can foster if you:
- ✓Are at least 21 years old
- ✓Are single or married — both are welcome
- ✓Rent or own a home with room for a child
- ✓Are financially stable for your own household
- ✓Can pass background checks (all adults in the home)
- ✓Complete pre-service training, including CPR & first aid
- ✓Pass a home safety inspection
- ✓Take part in a home study — honest conversations about your family

Everything families ask us
Who can become a foster parent in Texas?
Adults at least 21 years old who are financially stable, can pass criminal history and abuse/neglect background checks, complete pre-service training, and provide a safe home that meets state standards. Single or married, renting or owning — you're welcome here.
Do I need to own my home or be married?
No. Foster parents can be single, married, renters or homeowners. What matters is a safe, stable home and room in your life for a child.
How long does it take?
Most families complete orientation, training, background checks and the home study within a few months, depending on schedules and paperwork. We'll move at your pace and keep things simple.
Can I work full-time and still foster?
Yes — many foster parents work full-time. You'll need a workable plan for childcare and school, and we'll help you think it through during the home study.
How much does fostering cost?
There's little direct cost to become verified, and foster families receive state-provided reimbursement to help cover a child's daily needs. Fostering should never be a financial burden on your family.
Can I adopt the child I foster?
Sometimes. When a court decides a child can't safely return to their birth family, their foster family is often first in line to adopt. Learn how foster-to-adopt works.
